Member Spotlight: Rep. Steve Stivers (R-OH)

Steve Stivers was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2010 to represent Ohio’s 15th Congressional District. Before being elected to Congress, Rep. Stivers served in the Ohio state Senate and worked in the private sector promoting economic development and encouraging job creation.

Rep. Stivers has also served over 30 years in the Ohio Army National Guard and holds the rank of Brigadier General. He served the United States overseas during Operation Iraqi Freedom and received the Bronze Star for his leadership throughout the deployment.

Rep. Stivers received both a BA and MBA from The Ohio State University.

Why He’s Important to Agents

During his time in the House, Rep. Stivers has served on the Financial Services Committee, which has jurisdiction over most insurance issues. In October 2019, Rep. Stivers became the Ranking Member, or top Republican, on the Subcommittee on Housing, Community Development and Insurance, filling a role vacated by Rep. Sean Duffy, who resigned from Congress.

In his short time as Ranking Member of the subcommittee, Rep. Stivers has already had an impact on issues important to PIA National, particularly with House passage of the bipartisan SAFE Banking Act (H.R. 1595). Rep. Stivers was one of the top Republican cosponsors of the bill, which is meant to shield insurance agents, insurers, and banks from federal prosecution for doing business with cannabis-related enterprises in states in which such businesses are legal. In addition, Rep. Stivers supported the long-term reauthorization of terrorism risk insurance program (TRIA), which was enacted as part of the federal government spending deal passed in December 2019.

In 2020, PIA National will continue to work with Ranking Member Stivers on a variety of issues, including the long-term reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program and the enactment into law of a cannabis safe harbor bill that includes independent agents.
