Member Spotlight: Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC)

Tim Scott was appointed to the United States Senate to replace the retiring Jim DeMint in 2012. Prior to his tenure in the Senate, Sen. Scott served a term in the House of Representatives representing South Carolina’s 1st Congressional district and spent two years serving in South Carolina’s state legislature. Sen. Scott also worked as an insurance agent before his political career, and owned the Tim Scott Allstate Insurance Agency. Sen. Scott is a graduate of Charleston Southern University, where he studied political science.

Why He’s Important to Agents:

As the Ranking Member, or top Republican, on the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, Sen. Scott plays a leading role on issues important to PIA independent agents, including the reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), issues related to the Federal Insurance Office, and the formation of data security legislation.

Sen. Scott has played an active role on finding a long term solution to flood insurance, but has indicated how lack of support among lower-risk states has prevented a long term agreement on NFIP reauthorization. Sen. Scott also called federal disaster relief a double-edged sword as it relates to flood insurance. The relief is necessary for the damaged community, but has also discouraged people from buying flood insurance.

PIA looks forward to working with Sen. Scott during the 118th Congress.
