Senate Passes Amended Funding Bill with NFIP Extension

Today the Senate passed an amended version of H.R. 5305, the continuing resolution (CR) that will fund the federal government until December 3, 2021, by a vote of 65 to 35. Importantly for PIA members, the CR includes an extension of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) until December 3 as well.

An earlier version of the CR passed the House last week by a vote of 220-211. However, the Senate failed to pass it earlier this week because of opposition to a provision to extend the federal debt limit. After that, Senate and House leadership agreed to remove the debt ceiling provision before the Senate would consider the CR again.

Because the version that passed the Senate today differs from the version that passed the House last week, the House must vote again on the Senate-passed version. The House and is scheduled to consider it this afternoon. If the House does not pass the amended CR, or the president does not sign it, by midnight tonight, federal government funding will expire, and the NFIP will lapse.

PIA urges the House to pass the amended CR and the president to sign it into law before midnight tonight.
