Tonight, the U.S. House passed H.R. 5305, a continuing resolution (CR) to fund the federal government to December 3, 2021 by a vote of 220-211. As reported earlier this evening, the CR includes an extension of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) to that same date. Both the funding for the federal government and the operational authority for the NFIP are set to expire on September 30 unless Congress acts.
While PIA is pleased with the progress to prevent the NFIP from lapsing, H.R. 5305 faces an uncertain future in the Senate where Republicans have stated their opposition to various provisions, particularly the increase of the federal debt ceiling.
PIA will continue to advocate for the extension of the NFIP beyond September 30. PIA has also issued an action alert asking Congress to extend the NFIP before it expires at midnight on September 30. We encourage PIA members to make their voices heard by sending this urgent message to Congress today.
