Senate Approves Bill that Includes NFIP Extension Until Sept. 2021

This evening, the U.S. Senate voted to pass a continuing resolution (CR) to fund the federal government through December 11, 2020 by a vote of 84-10. This follows action from the House, which cleared the measure on September 22.

In a key win for PIA members, the bill includes an extension of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) until next year, to September 30, 2021. Right now, the program was set to expire at midnight. The president signed the bill into law shortly after midnight on October 1.

Congress now has a year to work toward a long-term NFIP reauthorization. PIA looks forward to spending this time working with members of Congress to advocate for the reforms we helped develop during the 116th Congress. We will also encourage legislators to embrace a long-term reauthorization similar to the PIA-supported NFIP package that passed the House Financial Services Committee in 2019.
