Congressman Peter T. King is serving his fourteenth term in the U.S. House of Representatives and represents the 2nd District of New York, which includes parts of Long Island. In November, Rep. King announced he will not run for reelection in 2020.
Prior to serving in Congress, Pete King served as the Comptroller of Nassau County on Long Island. Before serving in county government, Rep. King had extensive experience as a practicing attorney and civic leader. He began his political career in November 1977 by winning election to the Hempstead Town Council.
Why He’s Important to Agents
Although he is entering his final year as a member of the U.S. House, Rep. King is a senior member of the House Financial Services Committee and has been a leader on several important insurance issues that are currently being considered by Congress.
Rep. King has been a key supporter of the reauthorization of the terrorism risk insurance program and has historically pushed back against proposals to eliminate the program. In addition, Rep. King has been a tireless advocate for flood insurance policyholders and a supporter of the essential role of independent insurance agents in delivering the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) to consumers.
In recognition of his leadership on PIA National’s priorities, Rep. King was awarded the 2015 PIA Legislator of the Year Award, and he spoke to PIA members at our spring conference that year.
Rep. King’s leadership will be missed when he retires after this Congress, but PIA National will continue to work with him throughout the rest of his term as our advocacy for a long-term reauthorization of the NFIP continues.
