Member Spotlight: Congresswoman Cindy Axne (D-IA)

Cindy Axne represents the 3rd Congressional District of Iowa. Her district is comprised of the southwest corner of Iowa, including Des Moines and Council Bluffs. Prior to serving in Congress, Rep. Axne worked for the Tribune Company in Chicago and for the state government of Iowa. She has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Iowa and an MBA from Northwestern.

Why She’s Important to Agents

Rep. Axne serves on two committees with jurisdiction over important issues for PIA National. First, she serves on the House Financial Services Committee and the Subcommittee on Investor Protection, Entrepreneurship and Capital Markets and the Subcommittee on Housing, Community Development and Insurance.

The House Financial Services Committee has jurisdiction over the Federal Insurance Office (FIO), the repeal of which is one of PIA National’s top priorities. It also has jurisdiction over the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and the Terrorism Risk Insurance Program (TRIP), both of which are also high priority for PIA National.

Second, Rep. Axne serves on the House Agriculture Committee. In that role, she also serves on the Subcommittee on Conservation and Forestry and the Subcommittee on Commodity Exchanges, Energy, and Credit. The House Agriculture Committee has jurisdiction over the federal crop insurance program, which is vitally important to PIA National members.

The recent flooding in the Midwest, particularly in Nebraska and Iowa, has highlighted Rep. Axne’s committee work on both Financial Services and Agriculture. The flooding of farmland, homes, and businesses has shown the need for crop insurance and flood insurance. PIA National will continue to work with Rep. Axne on these and other issues of importance to independent insurance agents.
