The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) has lapsed after Congress was unable to strike a deal to fund the federal government by the September 30th deadline. While the House of Representatives passed a continuing resolution (CR) to fund the government through November 21, the bill did not reach the 60 votes required to pass in the Senate.
FEMA most recently issued NFIP lapse guidance in December 2024. While the NFIP is expired, no new policies or renewal notices may be issued. Additionally, any new policies or coverage increase requests dated after the expiration of the NFIP may not be issued. Policies in force the day before the NFIP’s expiration will remain in force, and any claims under an in force policy during the expiration will be paid as usual.
PIA will continue to work with Congress to quickly bring the NFIP’s lapse to an end. Stay tuned for further updates regarding the NFIP and government funding.
